Following a welcome speech by FSI's Compton Darlington, Business Development Director, the opening speech was delivered by Steve Hobden, Director of The Ultimate Solution Partnership. Steve's presentation highlighted the principle reasons why organisations fail to achieve the desired results from their purchase of a CAFM solution, envisaged as an enabler to achieve best practice in facilities management. By identifying and addressing improvement opportunities, significant results can be achieved in both enhanced service and reduced costs. Organisations should not end their use of a CAFM system at the implementation stage: by going the extra mile to integrate people, processes and technology, optimum performance will follow. This 'buy-in' needs to be at all levels of the organisation: from stakeholders, to management, to the end-users.
Geoff Prudence, Head of Building Maintenance & Facilities Management at Essex County Council, and Chairman of the CIBSE FM Group (Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers) gave a passionate speech regarding service risk management from a people perspective. Geoff addressed the risk to your business operations if the right skills aren't in place, which can be addressed by employing personnel with CIBSE accredited qualifications. CIBSE also run a Young Engineers Network, a nationwide network for the under 35's, who encourage students towards a building services career, as well as offering advise and guidance.
Steve Baxter, Maintenance Director at Carillion Facilities Management, delivered a frank presentation regarding their customers and their needs. Carillion deliver a maintenance approach aligned to their customers' business, and an asset replacement strategy aligned to the maintenance approach. By embracing mobile solutions technology, Carillion can provide real-time call management and closure, deliver critical engineering risk management, reliability centred maintenance and utility consumption monitoring to their technicians in the field. HVCA & other standard specifications are instantly available to engineers, and they can capture direct feedback from their customers. In conclusion, with the use of mobile solutions technology, Carillion's technicians are 'mobile customer relationship managers'.
Finally, Andy Karkocki, Head of Engineering Services at the London Stock Exchange, discussed the use of Concept™ 500 at site. From the initial installation of Concept™ 300 in 1997, through to Concept™ SQL in 2002, and the enterprise Concept™ 500 solution shortly after, the London Stock Exchange demonstrate the easy upgrade process of the Concept™ range. The solution is used for tasks including Visitor Management and Facilities Bookings, aside from Planned Maintenance, and Reactive Maintenance via the Helpdesk. Future enhancements to the Concept™ solution include the integration of Concept™ eSQL with Microsoft scheduled meeting data, the booking of all TV, Studio and Radio broadcasts, and a new web page housing engineering drawings. These enhancements will be strengthened by a training programme for Concept™ users at the exchange. Andy and his team have received a number of requests for advice from fellow attendees, as a result of highlighting some of the more unusual benefits to be achieved with Concept™.
Developed and hosted by Concept™ CAFM developers FSI (FM Solutions) Ltd, the Tune in to FM seminar series was established in 2004 to promote dialogue between users and systems developers. The free seminar series not only encourages the sharing of best practice between delegates from a wide range of industry sectors, but also brings to the fore the latest developments within the FM industry. Now in its fourth year, past events have been hosted at client sites including the Bank of England, Harrods, the Natural History Museum, Airbus UK Limited and Sheffield Hallam University.
